The slamming lockers and running footsteps are enough to make her eyes swell with tears. The snickers behind her are all too familiar, but she is not prepared for the shove to the back and degrading names that follow. In a split second, her mind is made up. She turns around, heads out the door, and doesn’t look back. The computer, her cell phone, and now school. The cyber-bullies have stepped out of the screen and into face-to-face contact. With this new kind of bully on the rise and ruthless, is she the school’s responsibility? Schools should be held responsible for cyber bullying because the crime extends from the computer to the school setting. Studies indicate that cyber-bullying incidents have quadrupled in past five years (Ross). Cyber-bullying has become a huge issue recently. Every time you turn on the news there is another bullying, or a suicide related to bullying, incident being reported. Love is louder† has been a common phrase among celebrities and influential figures lately. They are trying to send out a message to their followers saying that bullying is not right and should not be tolerated. The expansion of communication technologies is widening the way bully’s can torture their victims. The fact of the matter is, technology is not going anywhere, so we need to figure out a way to put an end to cyber-bullies. Cyber-bullying is becoming a major problem and we all need to do our parts in figuring out what can be done to stop cyber-bullies in their tracks. Cyber-bullies will continue to be a threat to today’s youth until we take preventative measures against them. Before putting a stop to cyber-bullying we must understand why and how a cyber-bully works. After researching and analyzing informative articles on the topic, this research paper aims to inform and answer questions such as: what a cyber-bully is, how they work, whom they target, and how to stop them. By understanding how a cyber-bully works we will be able to better protect youth populations as technology grows. Approximately half of U. Anything sent out into cyberspace is very difficult, sometimes impossible, to remove. Therefore, being cyber-bullied can sometimes be much more severe than traditional bullying. The author of the article, â€Å"What is Cyberbullying: Bullying Comes Home† explains it as, â€Å"any harassment that occurs via the Internet† (Hardcastle). Cyber-bulling messages can be communicated through text, e-mails, instant messaging, web pages, blogs, chat rooms, or any other information communication technologies. For example, Michigan’s assistant attorney general, who is a grown adult, has been harassing the University of Michigan’s openly gay student body president. Andrew Shirvell, assistant Michigan attorney general, created a blog in April of 2010 targeting Chris Armstrong, University of Michigan’s student body president. On this blog he has posted many rude, untrue, and unnecessary comments towards Chris Armstrong, along with distorted pictures. According to the article, â€Å"Assistant Michigan AG targets openly gay college student† the author states, â€Å"Shirvell has published blog posts that accuse Armstrong of engaging in ‘flagrant sexual promiscuity’ with another male member of the student government; sexually seducing and influencing ‘a previously conservative male student’ so much so that the student, according to Shirvell, ‘morphed into a proponent of the radical homosexual agenda’† (Steward). Mr. Shirvell is clearly a first-hand example of a cyber-bully and this article goes to show that it’s not just kids bullying each other in school anymore; it’s much bigger than that. There have been at least three teen suicides in September after experiencing homophobic cyber-bullying. Who are the main victims targeted by cyber-bullies? According to the article, â€Å"Cyber-bullying Facts† Middle school and High school girls are twice as likely as boys to display cyber-bullying behaviors in the form of email, text, and chat, and only 20% of cyber-bullying victims tell their parents about the incident (Ross). Cyber-bullies target students, coworkers, neighbors, and even friends. Lately, there have been many reports of suicides related to bullying. For example, the recent death of Tyler Clementi, a freshman at Rutgers University, is an extreme case of cyber-bullying. The article, â€Å"Rutgers student death: Has Digital Age made students callous† informs, â€Å"Mr. Clementi killed himself on September 22nd, 2010. According to prosecutors, a few days earlier his roommate, Dharun Ravi, and another student, Molley Wei, used a Web cam to secretly transmit images of a sexual encounter between Clementi and another man. They intended to do so again on September 21† (Khadaroo). With cyber-bullying a bully can pick on people with less risk of being caught. People who you would not see bullying someone in school don’t have a problem using the Internet to bully their victims because you can’t see their initial reaction. Bullying cannot only hurt the victim emotionally it can also cause them to have frequent headaches, indigestion and vomiting, loss of sleep, loss of appetite, paranoia, and suicide. In Tyler Clementi’s case he was so overwhelmed by what had been done to him that he jumped off of the George-Washington Bridge. It is important for college campuses to promote tolerance for differences, including homosexuality. From the article, â€Å"Rutgers student death: Has Digital Age made students callous† the author states, â€Å"We are tempted to think that social-media technology drove the behavior, but as a truly ethical matter, the behavior has to be and should be considered human-driven, not technology driven† (Foulkrod). Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania recently blocked the use of social media for a week to prompt discussions about its role in everyday life. Nobody wants to see this happen again; therefore, we need to come up with a solution to the problem. Some observers of today’s youth and media culture believe that today’s media environment could be desensitizing young people to the hurtful effects of their actions. What can be done to prevent cyber-bullying? Parents can start by talking specifically about yber-bullying and explain that is harmful and unacceptable behavior. Talk regularly with your child about on-line activities he or she is involved in, keep your home computer in easily viewable places, such as a family room or kitchen, and consider installing a filtering or blocking system (Ross). Also, you can â€Å"outline your expectations for responsible online behavior and clearly explain the consequences for inappropriate behavior† (Ross). The most important thing that can be done to stop a cyber-bully harassing you is to just not respond to the bully. Do not play into the bully’s games. Ignore the bully and tell a parent or teacher. While ignoring the bullying make sure to save all of the evidence so that if police need to be involved you will have it ready. In the article, â€Å"What is Cyberbullying: Bullying Comes Home† states, â€Å"Repeated or excessive harassment via email, forums or chat rooms is harassment and should involve the police. Threats of violence should also be reported to the police. Try to save all messages as evidence† (Hardcastle). Treat a cyber-bully like you would any other bully and they will lose their power. Another important way to prevent cyber-bullying attacks is if you see something going on don’t just be a bystander and let it happen, report it before anyone gets hurt. In conclusion, with the expansion of the Internet and social networking technologies cyber-bullying is becoming more common and more severe. The information presented in this research paper should give people a better understanding of what a cyber-bully is, how harmful they can really be, and how to prevent cyber-bullying from happening. This paper can be used to help victims realize they are not alone and should not give into a bully’s dangerous behaviors. This research paper is to inform society about what has been going on lately and how unacceptable and dangerous it is. Kids are killing themselves over photos, web posts, and videos posted by bullies using the Internet. Cyber-bullying is technology powered and will only get worse as technology becomes more widespread. Hopefully, this paper will help to inform today’s youth and parents. If you see any kind of bullying happening in front of you, stop it if possible, and then report it. Conclusion Cyberbullying is a growing issue in schools. Students have been in fights, brought guns to school, and even committed suicide because of being cyberbullied. This is an issue which is a growing problem and must be addressed. It is serious. It is about a girl who was married at a young age to a farmer. And faced a lot of challenges throughout her life. | I want to know how the protagonist of the story will live her life as a wife. Also the struggles she will face and the things she would do and sacrifice in order to overcome her hardships in life. Life is naturally hard and disastrous. We just have to learn how to face these disasters in order to succeed and survive. Giving up is not the solution to everything. Hope and perseverance will always stand against the odds in our lives. Rukmani shows the need to hold onto hope and the nectar of life despite all the overflowing tragedies. | The KWL Chart The novel started with the protagonist, Rukamani, narrating her own story in a first person poin t of view. Having a flashback of all the happenings in her life, Rukmani was able to analyze all the different events in her life.Rukmani is an educated woman who is married to a farmer named Nathan at the age of twelve. Her marriage is one of the greatest times in her life and she is thankful that her husband is kind to her. Rukmani wishes to raise a happy and healthy family while Nathan wishes to buy their own land. They had their first child Ira, and then followed by five sons; Arjun, Thambi, Murugan, Raja and Selvam. In Rukmani’s later years she gave birth to Kuti. The major conflict in the novel was the fight between life and death for the poor people of the small village.But when you go beneath the surface, you will see that it is not just a matter of life and death, but also a fight between the evil and the good that was challenged by the constant struggles that happened. The arrival of the tannery was a turning point in Rukmani’s life. Her restriction to Iraâ⠂¬â„¢s freedom from the tannery workers foreshadows the troubles her son will have with them. Two of her sons were dismissed at the tannery for leading the strike of workers after sometime of working there. She deals with losing her daughter because of her marriage that is too good to be true.Her marriage is also a form of foreshadowing in the novel. It foreshadows the future trouble with her fertility and security. Her husband returned her to her family because she cannot bear a child. Rukmani tried seeking for Kenny’s help but it was too late because Ira’s husband already found another wife. Rukmani’s sixth son, Kuti, brought Ira out of depression. She took care of the child until drought came and the family suffered hunger again. Kunthi’s prostitution foreshadows Ira’s similar fate. Ira turned to prostitution in order to feed Kuti. Kenny’s comeback symbolises hope for them.He returned from his long absence with the money he will use to pu t up a hospital. He offers help to Rukmani’s son, Selvam to be his assistant which Selvam quickly accepted. Kunthi’s blackmail attempt exposes Rukmani’s long held secret (her visit to Kenny’s clinic) and reveals that Nathan fathered Kunthi’s sons. Just as Nathan and Rukmani’s marriage survived Kunthi’s storm and became stronger, the family survives the drought and dares to hope once again. Ira had an albino child from prostitution but the family welcomed the child wholeheartedly despite what the villagers think.Just when it seems that the family had overcome everything, the biggest of the challenges came. They were told that they have to leave their land immediately because it was already sold to the tannery. Their decision to go to the city marks as the climax because this will change the direction of their lives. In the city, they found Puli, an orphan who helped them look for their son. During their travel at the city, they found o ut that their son left his wife and child and moved to some other place. They were also robbed at the temple and Rukmani wanted to go back to their village.When Nathan died at the temple in Rukmani’s arms, she went back home with Puli. Rukmani is a very strong woman. She has undergone so many struggles but yet, she doesn’t lose hope. The novel has different themes: hunger as threat to dignity, knowledge as power, and importance of fertility. Hunger and poverty is a powerful enemy to someone. People will do everything for fear of hunger, even sacrifice their dignity. Rukmani lost her sons because of hunger. Her elder sons seek new lives in other land; another son was killed for stealing, leaving Rukmani grieving.For fear of hunger her daughter turned to prostitution. She herself almost killed someone for thinking the last piece of their rice was being taken. In the novel, hunger and poverty breeds people who has no dignity. People with knowledge hold power. The tannery won against the workers because they have more knowledge. For Rukmani, white men have power and so she turned to Kenny. Kunthi uses her knowledge of Rukmani and Nathan’s secrets to exercise evil power. Puli’s knowledge of the city helped Rukmani and Nathan to look for their son.The commendable characters in the novel were the ones who apply their knowledge to good deeds. Importance of fertility is shown throughout the novel. Not just the fertility of women but also the fertility of the land. She sought the help of Kenny for fear of infertility and this caused Kunthi to blackmail her. Ira’s problems were also caused by her barrenness. She lost her husband for not being able to produce him a child. The fertility of the land is a symbol of life, it is so important to the villagers for when the land does not produce, the people will starve.The bullocks were related to the peasants of the land. The bullocks highlight the harmony of nature. The bullocks, like the peas ants, suffered from the injustice of overwork. They overwork for their owners to earn a living every day. The sari is a sorce of dignity, status, and pride. Rukmani’s sari on her wedding shows that her father was the headman and that she comes from important people. The Hinduism belief, dharma was present in the novel. It was shown in the novel when Rukmani sold the sari together with their bullocks and other possessions to pay for the land they live.By selling her most prized possession, she reduces her attachment to worldly goods as an important step toward achieving the hindu virtue of dharma. Rukmani is a strong voice of the poor because she seaks with carity and truth. She gets stronger in every challenge because of her devotion to truth. Mexican American have a deep reverence for religion, most of them are Catholic, and keep in a special place the image of Nuestra Seà ±ora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalu pe) which is a very important catholic of the Virgin Mary. Mexican American families are typically large and extended, women, although an important and respected part on the family, are seen as secondary to their husbands, which are the head of the family. Puerto Rican Because Puerto Rico is a United State territory, Puerto Ricans are considered United States citizen. This has gave a great advantage the to Puerto Ricans, because they are very proficient in Spanish as well as in English, therefore when they come to the United States, they have no problems or issues with the language. Religion can be very diverse among Puerto Rican, they can be catholics, as well as Muslim, Baptist or Methodists, or any other religion. In their family lives, Puerto Rican value family and unity. Because Puerto Ricans are considered the same as a person born in the United States, in politics they have the same rights and duties, as any other United State citizen, and even though they cannot vote, they do not have to pay federal taxes. Cuban American Cuban American are a predominant Spanish speaking group, although many of them a English proficient. Cubans have had great accomplishment in the political arena, they have members in the United States House of Representatives, and the House of Senate, they have also develop their own political organizations, which opposes the government of Fidel Castro. Because the resent Cubans that have immigrated to the United States are not well educated and prepared, they are not being well received, and because of that they are not able to obtain good jobs. However, Cubans that immigrated many years ago, had success in businesses, and second generations are the once enjoying this success. As any other Hispanic group, Cuban American values the importance of family, with the men at the head, and the women by their side. Cuban are Catholics; however, they mix their religion with many aspects and elements of African religions, giving birth a religion known as Lucumi. South American: Venezuelan American Venezuelans American in the United States are fairly new compare to other ethnic groups such as the Cuban American or the Mexican American that have been in the United Sates far longer than them. Venezuelan American have as a primary language Spanish; however, most of them are bilingual. Venezuelans learn English from an early age, as it is required in the school curriculum from first grade, all the way to high school. Venezuelans come to the United States mostly to protect their current way of living, because due to political instability, it is difficult for them to maintain it in their country. Family bonds are of very importance in for Venezuelan American, they rely their families, and the family unity is the center of the social integrity; the man in not always the head of the family, couples share equal power when it comes to family matters, the talk with each other before taking a decision, for them their parents are the main source of advice. In the United States Venezuel ans will try to group with other Venezuelans, this way they will be able to maintain their social structure, skin color is not at issue, what is important to have social status is how much money one have, or how much it looks like someone have. Regarding religion, Venezuelan American are catholics, although they are not as devout as other groups, they see religious holidays as an excuse to gather together and party. Venezuelan American are not involve much in politics, they can be seen more as business owners, actors, singers or designers. As we have seen, Hispanic ethnic groups can share many characteristics, primarily the language, and their family values; however, they are also different in several ways, not all of them are politically involve on their communities, and their social standard are different, while some look how the other speak, others, like the Venezuelan American, look to how much money the other have. Their religion views are a mixed as these different groups are. It can be concluded that even though because a large group of people speaks the same language they cannot be group into a single group. Jones-Correa (n.d,) points out that â€Å"Many in this population are relatively recent arrivals to the U.S. Since 1970, about 40% of the more than one million immigrants entering the U.S. in any given year have been from Latin America. Forty percent of all Latinos in the U.S. are first generation immigrants; for those over 18, that figure is over 60%. So while Latinos have consistently split their vote two-to-one in favor of the Democratic Party, many of these new arrivals are newcomers to the U.S. political system, with no strong loyalties to any political institution, and uncertain in their partisanship† ( ¶ 3). Puerto Rican Americans The primary language of Puerto Rico is Spanish; this is a result of the Spanish control of the island in the early 18th century; however both Spanish and English are spoken in Puerto Rico, with Spanish being the dominate language. Approximately 80 percent of the population speaks Spanish (Welcome to Puerto Rico, n.d.). Welcome to Puerto Rico (n.d.) also points out that the vast majority of Puerto Ricans are Catholics, while as small majority are Protestants, and a very small percentage is non religious. This much like the religions of Mexico is likely due in part to the Spanish colonizers of the early 18th century. Puerto Rican family life is, like that of Mexicans, very extensive and important. As Culture of Puerto Rico (n.d.) points out, â€Å"Puerto Rican family structure is extensive; it is based on the Spanish system of compadrazco (literally co-parenting) in which many members- not just parents and siblings- are considered to be part of the immediate family. Thus los abuelos (grandparents) and los tios y las tias (uncles and aunts) and even los primos y las primas (cousins) are considered extremely close relatives in the Puerto Rican family structure ( ¶ 43). According to Culture of Puerto Rico (n.d.) the assimilation of Puerto Ricans into American culture has had great success, but has also had many problems. Many Puerto Rican mainlanders have high-paying white collar jobs. Except for New York City, Puerto Ricans frequently have higher college graduation rates and higher per capita incomes than other Latino groups. However United States Census Bureau reports suggest that at least 25 percent of all Puerto Ricans living on the mainland live in poverty. Most of the political aspects of Puerto Ricans in the past, even from Puerto Ricans living on the mainland, have been to win the independence of the island; first from the Spanish, then from the American mainland. Culture of Puerto Rico (n.d.) points out that voter turnout in the United States mainland has been traditionally low for Puerto Ricans, some reasons offered for this is that the group has not been targeted by either political party. Cuban Americans As with the majority of Latino cultures the primary language is Spanish, almost exclusively. Cubans use highly expressive hand gestures. There was a brief period of time when French was spoken by European refugees that fled Haiti in 1791, but the French language is no longer used (Culture of Cuba, n.d.). Religion in Cuba has not been an influential as it has in other Latin American Nations for two reasons according to the website Culture of Cuba (n.d.), â€Å"first, in the colonial period the Catholic clergy were almost entirely peninsular (born in Spain). They represented the external power of Spain, and hence Catholicism itself was suspect, especially with the population which supported independence. Secondly, there simply were not very many priests in the rural areas, especially in Oriente. Those Cubans who chose to maintain a faith practice were left to produce a religiosity of their own design. The popular religiosity which did develop among white and creole Cubans was a local version of Catholicism enriched with African influences† ( ¶ 63). Family is less important to Cubans than it is to most other Latino cultures. This is a result of the Revolution which took over some of the familial economic and social functions. Families are smaller and less likely to include distant relatives (Culture of Cuba, n.d.). The vast majority of Cubans support a socialist government, as they have seen the quality of life improve due to the socialist government of Castro. They are leery of capitalism because they are afraid of the rift that it produces between the wealthy and the poverty stricken (Culture of Cuba, n.d.). Brazilian Americans Almost all Brazilians native language is Portuguese, which is a Romance language from the Indo-European language family. The linguistic affiliation of the Brazilian people was brought to Brazil by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century; prior to that the native people spoke various indigenous Indian languages (Culture of Brazil, n.d.) According to the Culture of Brazil website (n.d.) â€Å"Brazil is the largest Catholic country in the world even though the percentage of Brazilians who belong to the Catholic Church has declined in recent years, down from 95 percent in the 1950s. Today about 73 percent of Brazilians identify themselves as Catholic but an unknown number are Catholics by tradition, not by faith† ( ¶ 108). Most families in Brazil consist of parents and children; it is not the isolated nuclear family that is common place in the United States. The Brazilian culture puts great importance on the extended family. Brazilians like to live close to their kin, regardless of their social class. Grown children usually remain at home until marriage. It is common in among the urban middle class for extended family members to live in different units of the same apartment building (Culture of Brazil, n.d.) It is interesting to note that the Brazilian government is similar to that of the United States; so Brazilian immigrants often do not have a difficult time understanding the political process in the United States. Brazil has a constitution and three arms of government: executive, legislative, and judicial (Culture of Brazil, n.d.) Difference and commonalities It is apparent that the Latino cultures outlined in this paper have many things in common. For the most part each of the different cultures is predominately Catholic. Many of the groups place family above all else; unlike the culture in the United States, people living in the United States have become accustom to only rarely seeing extended family; those in the Latino community deeply value their familial ties. While Spanish is the most common language spoken in many of the Latino cultures it is by far not the only language spoken, as shown in the example above, the native language in Brazil is Portuguese. The political ideals of each group is also different, many of the groups native countries have governments very similar to that of the United States, some are the complete opposite. To group all Latinos under the term Hispanic is often looked upon by those being described by this term as an insult. Most immigrants from these various countries will not classify themselves as Hispani c, but as Cuban American, Puerto Rican, Brazilian American, Haitian American, etc. While there are many often many similarities there are just as many differences; in some instances the only similarity is the hemisphere they originate from. Words for our times Words for our times The latest version of the Collins English Dictionary has just been published, with some interesting new additions, including iPlayer, mankini (after Borats legendary garment), and Twitter. The words that officially enter the language no doubt reflect the influences and preoccupations of our times. So, after looking over this years new entries, I couldnt help but wonder: is the future of English completely ruled by television and technology? Well, not completely. The explosion of the social media trend definitely makes its mark: from the names of key sites to phonetically spelled words and phrases (surely more likely to be instant messaged than looked up) such as heh heh, mwah and soz. However, our cultures growing bent towards greener living is also represented, so we find out that an ecolodge is a sustainable hotel, and to be carborexic is to be a person obsessed with reducing their carbon footprint. Our fascination with celebrity-inspired trends combines neatly with the reality of living in the current economy in the word frugalista: a person who tries to stay fashionably dressed on a budget. This does beg the question: does anyone actually use these words? Or have the writers at Collins just been having fun making them up? Still, the question of technologys power over the way we write (and speak) could be greater than we realise. As a society increasingly melded to our PCs, iPhones and MacBooks, our use of grammar could come to be ruled by Microsoft Words occasionally erratic placing of squiggly lines. Now it is possible for the investigating agencies to keep a suspected person in custody as long as they wish without presenting him in the courts. Vaccinations, whic h cause the immune system to produce antibodies against diseases that a person has never had before, have been considered as important measures in saving lives especially infant lives. Through vaccinations, children acquire immunity from some diseases. In most part of the world where childhood shots are readily available, routine immunizations have believed to be an influential factor in dramatic declines in the incidence of targeted childhood diseases. Thus, in many places around the world, routine series of immunizations is somehow mandatory, though the number of boosters required may vary. In fact, for most Americans today, administering vaccines have been a routine part of their healthcare. â€Å"According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), children younger than two years old need to be vaccinated at least once against a series of diseases,† wherein the recommended common vaccinations include hepatitis A and B, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chicken pox, whooping cough or pertussis, diphtheria, bacterial meningitis, influenza, pneumococcal disease and rotavirus (Bocco, 2010). Actually, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in general agreement with similar agencies around the world, are recommending combination vaccines, such as MMR (for measles, mumps, and rubella), given in one shot, to help reduce the number of shots a child receives (â€Å"Your Child’s Immunizations†, n.d., para.7). However, recently, questions have arisen regarding commonly accepted practices of immunization especially to children due to some reported allegations of morbid complications of vaccinations. Such assertion particularly relating MMR vaccinations as a contributing factor to increased incidence of autism. How the Alleged Controversy Started The controversial issue of increasing rates of autism to children linking to side effects of MMR vaccinations was possibly heightened by the hypothetical studies presented by Andrew Wakefield and his colleagues.
